Sumatra:

Last weekend in Sumatra, Joko Guntoro and his team commenced the search for one of the world’s Top 25 most endangered turtles, the Southern River Terrapin (Batagur affinis). Once a common river and estuarine turtle of Southeast Asia, over-hunting for its meat and eggs, along with widespread habitat destruction, have all but wiped out this species from the wild. Now, small remnant populations are known only from Cambodia and Peninsular Malaysia. But, with the generous support of the Farallon Islands Foundation, the hunt to find them in Indonesia begins!

The Southern River Terrapin consists of two subspecies, the Eastern Malay River Terrapin (Batagur affinis edwardmolli) and the Western Malay River Terrapin (Batagur affinis affinis). The TSA and our partners believe a relic population of the Western Malay River Terrapin may still exist in southern Sumatra, hidden amongst its muddy waters and mangrove swamps. Joko and his team from the Satucita Foundation and the BBKSDA (Agency of Natural Resources Conservation) Riau are attempting to find evidence and produce verifiable records of a species widely believed to be approaching biological extinction in the country. They are basing their search area on historic records and anecdotal accounts of localized hunting within the last few decades.

Should efforts yieldpositive confirmation of the Southern River Terrapin in Sumatra, the TSA and ourpartners will engage in an intensive effort to restore its population there. Thisrestorative effort will be based on our successful Batagur conservation model, which has already been applied inBangladesh, Cambodia, India, Myanmar, and northern Sumatra.

The first steps to verifying the presence of terrapins in southern Sumatra began last Sunday, with habitat surveys and interviewing key informants within the target region. According to preliminary interviews with locals, the terrapins were indeed abundant in the region only a few decades ago. However, they haven’t been seen in roughly 20 years. With exemplary knowledge, proven field techniques, and a successful program implemented for Batagurs in northern Sumatra, we are confident that if any team can find the presence of the Southern River Terrapin in southern Sumatra, Joko’s will.

SUMATRA: FATE OF YANDI

By Alex 'Scorpidvenom' Adriaens on May 23, 2019

I'll come right out and say it; those among you who never played a classic point and click adventure before should really try this game on for size! Sumatra: Fate of Yandi is as classic as a point and click can be. But next to that it's a fascinating new Cloak and Dagger Games title that, once again, manages to blow my mind.

Back in November of 2017, I also reviewed their game Legend of Hand and oh boy, was that a fun game! Cloak and Dagger Games sure knows how to bring a point 'n click game to life with some great sounds, creative gameplay and an adventure full of options. In their latest title, you get to take the role of a man called Yandi, who works in an office and is almost famous for being tardy. Normally, his days aren't really that exciting, but today will be the exception to this rule. Yandi is about to set off on the greatest adventure he has ever had!

Yandi starts out his day by arriving at the office and is late again. An unfortunate event triggers a landslide and Yandi disappears into the jungle. Your task is to help Yandi survive and help him reach the higher ground, because options are more viable over there. So there is your main task: help Yandi by combining object you will find in the jungle or explore your surroundings and create new items with the ones you already have. By doing this successfully, you will open up a host of new options and maybe even different paths to take. Who knows. I mean, it's your pointer, so click on whatever you like.

This retro-style point and click adventure game is set on the island of Sumatra, which is a very beautiful island, located in Indonesia. It has towering waterfalls, mountains and, of course, the famous Sumatran tiger, which you will also encounter in this game. So your job is to bring Yandi back home to his beloved Adiratna and his friend Ramdan. While doing just that, you will encounter all kind of problems within the lush jungle of the Island of Sumatra. You will encounter tigers, bears, other wildlife, the jungle, ancient structures, mountains, raging rivers and much, much more.

I really got the sense of an old-school Sierra point and click game while playing Sumatra: Fate of Yandi. It's those games I played while growing up and I have always thought they were absolutely brilliant. I think it's super cool that Cloak and Dagger Games is providing us with another one of these awesome point and click adventures in the same old retro style and feel; just like how a classic point and click game should be. They really did a great job here; the sound is great, the atmosphere is great, you really feel alone and lost in the rain at the start of the game.

The game encompasses about 3 to 5 hours of this kind of cool gameplay, depending on your experience in this genre. I must say that it has a lot to offer for an old school point and click. It really makes you think about what to do next in order to safely bring Yandi back home. In the end, it's these kind of games that keep you thinking about them, because what can be a better adventure than to click through your own adventure, right? Whether you're a point-'n-click veteran or completely new to the genre; if you like solving puzzles and exploring environments, you should really try Sumatra: Fate of Yandi. And trust me when I say that you will definitely not be disappointed!

Sumatra:

So, with everything thoroughly pointed at and clicked, I can only say that Cloak and Dagger Games managed to rekindle my love for point and clicking games. They made it possible to relive the feel I got from 80's and 90's point and click adventure game and, may I say, did so perfectly! I hope they will continue launching more of these kind of games, because I'm already anxious to see what great adventure awaits next time! But first, I really need to return to Sumatra and see how my buddy Yandi is doing!
